Cognitive Hypnotherapy

A flexible, modern talking therapy with the needs of the client at its heart.

Everyday trance

Cognitive hypnotherapy is a gentle process which often feels more like a conversation. It uses 'everyday trance' to engage you in deep relaxation; this is all that is needed to bring about a state of focussed receptivity. You are still aware of your surroundings; it feels akin to driving on autopilot and arriving at your destination almost without noticing how you got there.

A bespoke programme tailored to your needs

Cognitive Hypnotherapy is a highly structured, modern therapy with a wide range of tools and strategies derived from Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), Positive Psychology, Evolutionary Psychology, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Traditional Hypnotherapy amongst others. I create a bespoke treatment which is as individual as you are; there are no predetermined scripts for specific issues. I offer you confidentiality, empathy and a calm, safe place in which to explore. The therapy is a joint endeavour; it's me and you working together to create change.

Solution-focussed

As a Cognitive Hypnotherapist I aim to create effective, lasting change. My approach is solution-focussed from the very start. We begin with your story and getting to know you; the meanings attached to your perceptions, beliefs and behaviours which have developed since childhood and the contexts and events which have shaped them. What emerges creates opportunities to revisit old memories and reframe them to help you move forward.

Every unconscious behaviour has a positive intent

This is perhaps the most surprising thing about the unconscious mind. The stress response is the body's immediate reaction to perceived danger. The unconscious wants to keep us safe to guarantee survival. Nowadays there are no sabre-toothed tigers out there to threaten us, but the same physiological responses are activated in modern life in relation to prolonged demands when stress becomes unmanageable. Work deadlines, health issues, relationship problems, money worries; a myriad of problems can trigger this primitive mechanism. This evolutionary mismatch can contribute to chronic diseases such as hypertension, anxiety and depression.

Unconscious patterns can keep us stuck

The nervous system relies on the unconscious mind to spot patterns to avert danger. It compares past threats and new situations, and if they appear similar it induces fear to protect us from danger. Despite good intentions, such primitive thinking can repress memories, skew perceptions and keep us stuck, all in the name of keeping us safe. Just stepping outside your comfort zone, for example starting a new job or learning to drive, can be perceived as a threat which triggers procrastination or involuntary resistance. I can help you move forwards again, homeward bound, back towards yourself and what you want out of life.
